Problem: Political contention
The problem with the disconnect between the Republicans and Democrats is a confusion between taxes and insurance premiums.
Social Security and Medicare are mandatory insurance programs. So rather than call them premiums, politicians call them taxes.
When the Republicans say vote for me, I promise no new taxes, the voter does not see their social security and medicare programs are at risk for a lack of premiums being paid.
In addition, the social security trust fund has been spent and needs to be replenished by new taxes as payments need to be paid to new retirees.
The members of the 98% are cutting their own old age benefits by voting for Republicans.
